The genie in the bottle is what highlights some of the problems with this game. There’s no way that a person on their first playthrough is not going to open that bottle, and only by opening it and knowing what happens could the player possibly consider giving the bottle to the witch to open

My version had a weird glitch where i couldn't offer him the book to exchange for the Shepards Rook!?😢😢😢 i dont understand it. The book item wouldnt light up white when i selected it and hovered it over him...

Hello Shady. Hello everyone also. Thanks for the stream. It was very fun and entertaining. Congratulations on finishing the game. I guess time to get all the achievements, now. This Riven is okay/fine. Some changes are nice, like visiting the village. I concur with the death of the bridge, as it was nice to have the islands connected, and have another way to go through the Islands. This version of Riven seems much easier than the original Riven. Only one puzzle element was difficult for me, the marbles puzzles, with figuring how to subtract and how to add. It took some time before realising it was the number given by the light marble, which I put in the machine without knowing what to do with it. It seemed they updated it with a ding sound, as in your stream. The characters model are a bit better than Myst VR, but I still prefer live and real actors like in the orignal Riven. I had a funny bug/glitch during visiting Gehn's age. I was out of the cage, and I could walk freely during his speech. It was really bizarre. I have some of it recorded, and put it on my channel, if you want to check it, now that you have finished the game. I have one save with this glitched state, meaning I can reproduce the bug for the second visit to Gehn's age. As nice as the real time 3D looks, Riven appears cluttered now. The subtlety that made the original game so good is missing.

Greetings. I don't know if there's anyone still following this video after all these years, but I'll try. I'm playing Riven (old version not the remake) via GOG. But when I click on objects (e.g. the egg in Ghen's lab), the mouse cursor doesn't disappear. What does it mean? Does it still work or maybe the easter eggs were removed in the GOG version?

Hey the next time you go back into the round-hole prison thing, use the glass finder thing to look for marks for the invisible button thing that opens the brick wall thing to the tunnel thing. I bet that thing was intended to make that easier to find and you just missed it the first time around.

So what's wrong with RealMyst: Masterpiece Edition? Rand will never make Myst with the same design/aesthetics but in interactive 3D so RM:ME is the closest we're ever going to get and it deserves a bit more credit.

I didn't even notice the pipes were changed to be above water. Thing is, I personally think it's more realistic that they're ABOVE water. The pipes would likely require maintainence from time to time. In the original, they'd have to send divers to make repairs whereas in the remake they'd just need boats.

18:43 that happens all the time. It's called Retconning. It's understandable because they were shooting in the dark when they made Myst in '93. Things change as they build the univers up. At least we don't have a "starwars" on our hands :D 19:52 I have to disagree with your argument, because Myst 1 is a pretty isolated "episode" within the Myst series. Is D'ni even mentioned by name? It's only natural that the expanded universe feel different, but since it didn't exist at the time they couldn't have aligned them. Basically, Myst might as well just have been a one off - is that what you prefer? And the rest of the series were Riven 1, 2, 3, etc.?

I like how Riven feels more believable. I think that's the right word; not realistic. Riven is a fantasy universe and there is nothing realistic about it. I think, those who want Myst to feel like a dream-scape, is in a very small minority. The only thing I truly dislike about the canon universe is that worlds are not created/written, but just handpicked from existing worlds based on the description book.

I think the "magic" that is lost is due to moving it into full 3D. You can't make the same game, if you change how it's played and how it looks.

It's 2024. and Myst 4 is still the most graphically appealing to me. And I prefer the 360 degrees node based controls, as it's more relaxing to just play with a mouse. What would pre-rendered backgrounds look like today; HD photorealistic? Because of the URU and DRC (D'ni Restoration Council), and supposably another book cooking, there is room for maybe a new trilogy (w/ pre-rendered graphics and 360 nodes). One can dream.

VR is terrible

I really hope they remake Exile. That is my favorite in the MYST series. Any of the other games afterwards, meh unless they change the story, game-play, VA's, and dialog (we don't talk about Catherine's new accent in the 4th game 🤢) to improve them. I think it would be cool if we could get a prequel type of game that shows Atris as a child with his grandmother being the one to help you through the game.

Not an adventure puzzle game, but I'd love a playthrough of you playing Still Wakes the Deep. For an adventure puzzle game I'd adore a plathrough of a classic, Zork Nemesis

Wish I could of watched this live. Loved the recording though. I'm still impressed with how good cyan are at recreating their 2d worlds into real-time 3d in completely different engines. The vr made me feel nausea though so prefer non vr playthroughs. Vr must be so bad to your eyes being so close.

Great stream! I don't think I like this version of Riven but I enjoyed watching you play it. Walking you the edge of the Fire Marble Dome was cathartic.

I think you hamstrung yourself by not laying out both ideas at the start. People can only react to the antithesis without really having a good idea of what the thesis will be. As a fan of video essays, I will say that a two hour video is always a treat. I don't watch them all at a stretch, I switch between watching, listening, and taking breaks. Not exhausting at all.

Cyan's changes don't bother me that much but you made some interesting points in your last video. The tendency to overexplain and rationalize things is a bit strange. Yes, the deforestation is annoying but otherwise RealMyst is a nice way to explore the world in 3d. It's really sad how they changed the Channelwood water switches to accommodate VR. The problem with RealMyst is down to the scale of the island, which is why there's less trees. It would be hard to make the forest just as dense as it was in the original. If they had scaled the island up a little bit, I think it would have looked better (say 50% larger). Similarly Channelwood has an issue with the scale of the switches in Myst VR - or rather their height. The metal levers do not fit the age and I think a good compromise would have been to raise up the switch so that they sit at a comfortable height without changing the age too much (see for example the bridge you have to extend to reach the other platform inside the big dome in Riven which is placed at a decent height but might control something below the player) I really like the effort you're putting into this and; I think you could learn something from watching the more recent videos of Dilandau3000 as they generally have a very good narrative and if it was possible, I would love to see a video of you two just discussing the Myst series and maybe other Cyan games too. And here's a last little nugget: Rime is just a play on the word "prime" as it would "prime" you for visiting Riven. (this is my interpretation, not a fact)

What the original had that I'm missing more on each iteration of Myst, is the eery, dark, creepy, ominous feeling of being somewhere I'm not SUPPOSED to be. Liminal space like. While it never was a horror game, many locations gave me the shivers down the spine. THAT is what I'm missing the most today. I do like the remakes for the 3D aspect of them, other than the poorly animated characters breaking my immersion whenever they come on screen. Greatly prefer the FMV modes, which isn't a thing for the otherwise pretty good Riven remake I'm playing rn.
